More Private Exploits...

Following a storming set at The Wee Chill Festival this week, The Privates Hammond Orchestra return a week later a Glasgow's soul institution Divine on Sat 3 October at Glasgow School of Art. Matching this dynamite three piece with a club night that's dedicated to the best in Soul, Funk, 60s Beat and other grooves is a no-brainer and sure to be the best night out in the Northern Hemisphere this week. To ensure full potential for pleasure, we'd recommend the excellent pre-club "Get The Records On" hosted by Jamie & Ian at the CCA bar next to the Art School from 8pm. See you there!

More Starla Related Events This Weekend

We've got another couple of Starla events this weekend coming, first of all our old friend Kevin Rowland (of Dexy's Midnight Runners) will be returning to Glasgow for a dj set at the Rio Cafe on Friday night (Friday 25 September) . Kevin made the trip up last year and played an amazing set with added live vocals at the Starla DJs old Sunday Service club, and we've stayed in touch since. This time Kevin is playing a low-profile bar show just for you!

Then on Saturday (26 Sept) Craig Loosejoints will be djing at the second Wee Chill Festival of the year at Glasgow's Queen's Park Glasshouse. Also appearing are Starla recording artists and all-round good-guys The Privates Hammond Orchestra. Set times are still TBC, but the whole shebang runs from 6pm-12am

Craig and fellow Starla DJ Mark Robb will also be spinning at the official Wee Chill afterparty at The Admiral on Waterloo Street till 3am. Full details here

Privates On Parade

Over the past couple of months we've been working in the Starla studios with local heroes The Privates Hammond Orchestra on a number of recording projects. We're pleased to announce that the results of these sessions will include a co-release with the excellent Record Kicks Records of Milan on a 45 release and a track contributed to the next installement of their dynamite "Soulshaker" compilation series. There is also a Starla debut 45 for The Privates to come and the results of some soundtrack work we've been doing with them as well. More details to come.

In the meantime, if you want to get in on the ground floor of The Privates rise to world domination you could do worse than head to Glasgow's renowned Rio Cafe this coming friday at 9pm for a free-entry performance by the band.

For those of you further afield, you could do worse than checking out their Privates for yourself over here http://www.myspace.com/theprivateshammond

Words from the Don...

The DT6: The Theme From ‘The Baden Persuader' (Starla)

So here’s the second great 45 from this Glasgow-based Funk label. Obviously not trying to pose as an original late-60’s Funk record it succeeds on many levels because it’s a cross of modern studio sounds and live musicianship merging together to give us a track in the ‘blaxploitation’style of soundtrack Funk. It works perfectly and is as equally as good as anything in this style that has gone before.

Hot Hot Hot!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all we're now down to the last box of copies of "(Theme From) The Baden Persuader", thats about 20 copies so please don't hesitate if you're wanting a copy, cos we ain't re-pressing (unless you're going to order 300 or something).

We've also been working away at Starla HQ (aka "The Barn") our heavily fortified Glasgow studio, in the last week with the latest label artistes "The Star-Las". Less of a jazz tribute to Scouse-songsters of the nineties, more of a three-headed R&B/boogaloo monster bearing drums, guitar and TWO Hammond organs. Sessions have gone extremely well so far and new music will be unveiled very soon, to be first to hear about it, email us at starlarecords (at) gmail.com and we'll keep you in the loop.

No new artwork as yet, but to keep the page from being a mass of text, heres a pic from the recent DT6 show at the Old Fruitmarket with JTQ as part of the Glasgow Jazz Festival

The DT6 - Baden Persuader / Takes - New 45 Out Next Week - Pre Order Details!

The DT6 - "(Theme From) The Baden Persuader"
b/w
Emili Sandé & Marco with The DT6 "Takes"

Starla Records SRC 1002 – 45 Single

Scotland’s Starla Records return with their second 45 featuring another funk/soul split single from the label’s house band The DT6.

This time the A-side comes in the form of “(Theme From) The Baden Persuader” an Eastern sounding funk track with echoes of the exotic 60s spy soundtracks of Lalo Schifrin and Turkish Psych.

On the flipside is “Takes” which features the label’s own Marco on vocals, though this time the duties are shared with rising Scottish vocalist Emili Sandé. Gaining the support of fans and critics alike for her solo acoustic (modern) R&B, Emili has taken the opportunity to work with the DT6 on the classic Northern/Modern Soul sound. Featuring string and brass sections and group backing vocals, “Takes” is the largest recording yet undertaken by Starla.

In contrast “(Theme From) The Baden Persuader”, in common with the majority of The DT6’s unaccompanied work, comes from organic jam sessions, where the band experiment with sounds, all the while letting the funk flow. Indeed the organ solo on “Baden Persuader” came about as an accident as it was the warm-up for the band with the newly-installed Starla Hammond on the band’s first run through on tape.

Starla have a number of other recording projects lined up for future releases with other artists and collaborations, more info and upcoming live dates for The DT6 soon.

The records will return from the pressing plant in the next week, to pre-order for £5.00 plus P&P please use the paypal link on the page above or email us at starlarecords (at) gmail.com

As the first 45 has all but sold out (think we've got 5 copies kicking about the office if you're after one, be quick!) this is now the only way to get "Don't Doubt Me" & "Open My Eyes".

DT6 Launch and more news.....

First up a massive thank-you to everyone from across the globe who has offered support and encouragement on the launch of Starla Records.

The DT6's debut 45 has certainly captured the attention of funk & soul collectors and djs around the world, and we're happy to announce that we have the band recording follow up material at the moment. We also have a few other irons in the fire for other releases, more details will be posted here soon...

In the meantime we have finally got around the sorting out a belated launch party for the DT6 single. Having a band made up of in-demand session players is great until you try to get them in a room at the same time!

The finalised date is Thurs 12 March at Glasgow's Rio Cafe on Hyndland Street from 8.00pm. The DT6 will be performing the tracks from the 45 and debuting a few new tracks, with some special guests due to appear with the band as well.

Demand for the first Starla single has been huge and we are now in a position where only the last few copies will be available on the night for the launch. You can still order copies through the site though, we will remove the link as soon as they sell out (which will be soon, so grab one while you can, we're not planning to re-press so once the 500 go thats it!).

Plans are afoot to release a download/mp3 version of the tracks through I-Tunes etc, again we'll post detials here when we have them.

Thanks again and please get in touch with any queries, comments, recipes etc - starlarecords (at) gmail.com

Starla Records 1001 - Debut Release The DT6 - "Don't Doubt Me"

Due for imminent arrival is the debut vinyl release from Glasgow's Starla Records.

The first in what we hope will be many 45 releases is from our house-band The DT6, with a storming Hammond-led slice of funk entitled "Don't Doubt Me". Recorded in Glasgow with the cream of Scotland's new generation of funk and jazz musicians we hope it sets the tone for the label with a benchmark of quality and originality. The b-side is another DT6 track with the addition of vocals from Marco entitled "Open My Eyes", a sweet and more laid-back track with a whole lot of soul.

Future releases will feature other artists and a variety of styles, but always with the Starla stamp of quality. We'll be posting details of how to pre-order the 45 from us as well. In the meantime, here's a look at the label designs and a sample of the a-side to give you a taste of what's to come...

To order a copy (£5 plus postage) email - starlarecords (at) gmail.com
